In its efforts to taking the services of the national ombudsman closer to the people, the Office has officially established a Provincial Office in Eastern Province.

On Tuesday, 20th February, 2024, despite a busy schedule in preparing for the just-ended Nc’wala Traditional Ceremony, Eastern Province Permanent Secretary, Mr. Paul Thole, and His Worship, Mayor of Chipata City, Mr. George Mwanza met a team of officers from the Office of the Public Protector (OPP) led by the Chief Administrator, Mr. Kebby Hakalima.

In welcoming the Office of the Public Protector in the province, Mr. Thole underscored the importance of establishing an Office in the province as it will provide much-needed oversight to public institutions following the devolution of some of the central government’s functions to local authorities.

Meanwhile, His Worship, Mr. Mwanza expressed happiness that the services of the Public Protector have been decentralized to Chipata, a move he described as timely as it will allow citizens to participate in the governance of the country by holding people in public

institutions accountable.

The Civic leader, however, urged the Office of the Public Protector to embark on an awareness campaign in the province to alert the members of the public of their administrative and social rights.

Meanwhile, Mr. Hakalima disclosed that the institution in the province would soon begin to sensitize members of the public on the constitutional mandate and functions of the Public Protector to encourage the uptake of the institution’s services.
